The Uncomfortable Truth

In the information age, the health world is full of contradictory ideas and misconceptions which hold us back in life. This podcast is aimed at helping isolate and unpack the misconceptions of the western medical system and in the western culture at large, with respect to health and therapy. Digging into the uncomfortable and necessary harsh truths so that we can liberate ourselves from bad patterns, and align to our most authentic and enriched life path.

Trigger Warning! This episode is about 'victim thinking' and how our culture seems to enable and reward it.  Different political movements or even our family and friends may encourage us to continue believing things that may be damaging to our progress.  In some way, if we can make it not our fault, then we can feel happy in our current state, and don't have to change.  In all areas of life, business, health, relationships, the limiting beliefs we carry are creating very real outcomes in the real world.  What if it's you? What if it's what you're doing which is creating the problem, and not the things you place blame on? A harsh and potentially triggering episode :)

In this podcast I discuss the growing awareness of the link between emotional / mental causes and physical sickness.  The bio-psycho-social model is evidence of this respect for the multi-faceted nature of health, but there still seems to be a general distrust and perhaps fear of these connections in the mainstream culture.
Similar triggers can manifest different types of sickness, depending on our bodies and genetic profiles. This is why generalised disorders such as CSS (centralised sensitivity disorder) and other systemic disorders are beginning to emerge with seemingly different manifestations of sickness, all categorised under the same disorder.
We also use 'Polymyalgia / Fibromyalgia' and 'Migraines / Headaches' as examples of how a social or psychological stressor can create a physical sickness.

In therapy we are not unpacking ideas alone. Many people understand their problems on an intellectual level, but the problem isn't fixed, or we feel like the talk therapy we're doing doesn't get to the heart of the problem.
We often acknowledge how we pick up our parents quirks like speech or movement patterns, but what we don't tend to think about, is how we pass on or develop an entire complex bundle of emotions and energy around particular topics.
In this podcast I use the concept of 'imprinting' and 'energetic signature' to show how our issues are multifaceted, and as such, may require a multifaceted solution. This is why somatic therapies or psychotherapy where we are enacting and engaging with the feelings, rather than talking about them, can get closer to (and heal) the core of the issue.

How many reps should I do? should i go harder or back off?.... Cumulative robustness, test and rest, appropriate loading.... A lot of the questions we ask around exercise miss the point. It's more about the quality of the exercise, and tuning into our bodies than simply the number of reps we do! In this episode, I share a concept about performance and recovery exercise being seperate categories of exercise, so that we can better understand what our goals are and therefore how to exercise properly for our specific outcome.

Chiro's are quaks! Physios are stiffs! ...... With so many different disciplines of therapy, it can be hard to know what all of them do and which one is right for us.  There is no right or wrong modality.  While there are some consistent differences, advantages and disadvantages or particular disciplines, tuning into your intuition around the quality of the connection, the individual skill and knowledge of the practitioner, and how safe they make you feel are perhaps the most important!

So many different exercise classes nowadays! Crossfit, powerlifitng, gyms, yoga, pilates, hit classes..... Choosing what type of exercise can be overwhelming. In this episode, I discuss a little about the different types of training categories and what their main goals are, so that we can be better informed when selecting a training facility that matches our lifestyle and goals.

One of the most useful frameworks I have found to view health is to see the human as an organism which is adapted to a particular environment.  Health could be seen as simply the degree to which a person is in alignment with their true nature.  If we have too much or too little of something, we get off balance, and eventually we get sick.  Health is just balance in accordance with what we are adapted to. Over thousands of years our environments and lifestyles have changed so much, but our 'apparatus' (the body) hasn't really changed. In order to be healthy today, we need to identify what our environment gives us too much or too little of, and engage in offset activities to bring us back to the middle-ground (homeostasis)
